Frequently Asked Questions

Here is a list of the most popular questions asked by students. Feel free to contact Rob, Dave, or any faculty member of our department to answer questions in mind.

What Computer Should I buy?
It is not necessary to own a computer to complete either of the degrees in audio. The college provides access to all of the computer labs and audio computer systems that you will need for your homework assignments and project work. However, you may find that it is more convienent to have your own computer system at home to do some of your work.

It would not be practical to attempt to have a home computer system with all of the capabilities of the audio computer systems at the school. Some of the professional digital audio workstations at the college cost as much as $50,000! But, you can put together a modest system which is affordable and will enhance your learning experience at the college. We recommend the following:

1) Intel-based Macintosh, OS X 10.5.5 or higher, 2 GB RAM minimum.

2) Microsoft Office software

3) Digidesign Mbox II audio system with Digidesign Pro Tools 8.0

Educational discounts are available for students and faculty at Apple retail stores or online at the Apple Store for education.

Information about the digidesign Mbox system can be found at www.digidesign.com.

How do I get an Internship?

NEiA Audio Production students will have to intern for an audio-based company in order to graduate from the program. These internships are to be taken during AMT397 and AMT398 classes. The Audio Department also advises students to have additional internship experience (if they are able to) during their education here at the college. Our Career Services Department may have postings available for students interested in getting an internship in the audio field. Also, it may be beneficial to ask audio faculty members here at the college about possible internships that may be available in the area.

Tai Irwin is your audio production department career services advisor and is located at the Career Services Center at 34 Station Street. (across the railroad tracks from the 10 Brookline Place building). Please visit him if for job and internship information.

How do I get in touch with my teacher?

A complete listing of faculty contacts is available at the following link: Faculty Contacts Link

If you are uncertain who your teacher is, proceed to the Registrar's office (2nd floor) and pick up your student schedule.

You can also email or visit your Department Chair, Rob Lehmann or Assistant Department Chair, Dave Lefkowitz anytime during the week.

How do I find out who my faculty advisor is:

Advising Week:
Find your advisor so that you can plan your courses for next semester.  For first and second semester students, please work with the academic support center.  During your third semester you will be assigned to an audio department full-time faculty member who will be available to help you and act as your “mentor.”  You can look up who your academic advisor is in your student portal or the academic chair, assistant chair, administrative assistant, or registrar can help you to acquire this information. See resources -> contacts page of this website.

Registration Week:
You should be ready to register if you have met with your advisor.  Classes can fill up quickly, so register as early as possible.  Computer stations will be set up in the student lounge with staff available to assist you, and online registration instructions will be available in the registration booklet. If you are to take a semester off, you will have to fill out a Student Change of Status form, which requires a dept. chair signature.  If you are to take fewer than 4 courses, you will have to fill out an Altered Schedule Request, which requires a dept. chair signature.

What should I do if I am a late start student?

In the unfortunate event that you are starting your classes late, complete the following steps…

1. Find out your instructors’ names and email addresses.

Note: If the name of your instructor shows “STAFF”, please contact Rob Lehmann (contact info below) for the name of your instructor.

2. Get in touch with your instructors, receive course information, and complete all assignments.Emailing is probably the most efficient way to reach your instructors, but you can swing by an instructor’s desk during his or her office hours.

Topics for discussion:
Materials & texts needed for the course
Syllabi, handouts, and missed assignments.
Make up classes available.

3. Purchase necessary materials and receive your audio kit.The NEiA Bookstore is within the Basement Level UG.
