Audio Production Mentoring Program

Dear Students,

Up until now you have had the opportunity to meet with one of the full-time audio instructors in an academic advising capacity. If you took advantage of this meeting, you probably discussed what classes to take in the following semester.

We would now like to make the distinction between academic advising and faculty mentoring. Your instructors have all had (and continue to have) professional careers in the various fields that make up audio production.

At this point in your journey through NEiA, we would like to give you the opportunity to meet with your faculty in a mentoring situation. You will be able to discuss your goals for the remainder of the time you will be in school, and your professional goals.

You should look over the list of available faculty and select who you would like to meet with. Contact that faculty member to schedule a half-hour meeting. When you go to the meeting you should bring your updated resume, ideas for internships, professional goals, and an open mind!

Although we would say that this is a "required" meeting- no one is going to check up on you to see if you have in fact followed-through with your mentoring meeting. It is up to you to use this opportunity to get to know your faculty and take advantage of the wealth of experience that they possess to help you refine your goals and plan the best route to get there.

How it works:

Third semester students are able to choose a mentor of their choice (see mentors below) and then set up an appointment for mentoring. After this initial meeting, additional meetings can be scheduled during future semesters up to the student's graduation point. A mentor can only take six mentorees a given semester and signing up with a mentor is on a first come first serve basis - so act quickly.

Rob Lehmann is the department chair of Audio Production at The New England Institute of Art.He holds a Bachelor of Music from Berklee College of Music and a Master of Business Administration from the University of Massachusetts.Rob has mixed a few nightclubs, recorded numerous studio projects, and done lots of on-location recording- primarily of jazz, classical, marching band, and other acoustic ensembles.Rob has been on the faculty of NEIA for 14 years and the department chair for 10 years. He teaches Location Recording these days, but has also taught Audio Recording I and II, Music Production, and Listening & Analysis. Rob has also been teaching music history at Bunker Hill Community College for 15 years. Before his professional life in audio production and higher-ed administration, Rob has been a mailman, stock boy, guitar lesson giver, sheet rock hanger, landscaper, and porter at a Lincoln-Mercury automobile dealership.

Dave worked as a staff recording engineer for Prophet Sound, located in Stoughton, MA (location now Solstice Sound). Dave has worked on over 100 CDs of varied musical styles and continues to produce and record music under the Lefko Productions name. A non complete, but substantial discography is located at www.lefkoproductions.com. Dave currently composes and performs his own music under the name Unyti (www.unyti.com). In 1999, Dave became a principal business partner of Renaissance Recording Company, on Arlington Street, in the Back Bay area of Boston. There, he held the title of Chief Audio Engineer. At Renaissance, David acquired industry recording business experience by fully managing the facility after his business partner left his position as studio manager to pursue a higher education. For this later period, Dave performed duties such as studio booking, administration and finance, staff management, and building management.September 2000, David Lefkowitz began teaching audio-based technology and audio recording techniques at the New England Institute of Art. Since then, David has educated various courses for the audio department. Some of the courses David teaches are Audio Technology 1&2, Audio Recording 1&2, Hard Disk Recording, Listening and Analysis, Principles of Computer Music, Electronics I, Advanced Recording Techniques, and Advanced Mixing Techniques. David also has developed curriculum for the college’s audio certificate (CPD) program, and has taught several sections in the audio CPD program. He has served as Assistant Chair for the NEiA Audio Production Department since August 2006.

Owen Curtin has been teaching Audio Recording since 2002. He holds a BA in Media Arts from Emerson College and in December of 2008 will complete his Masters in Music Technology at Newcastle University. He is a faculty advisory for the student chapter of the Audio Engineering Society and works on the NEiA admissions and technology committees. Owen operates The Mix Hut recording studio in Cambridge, MA. In 2007 he completed 3 documentary films for Bella Rose Films, recorded and mixed two a capella albums, engineered the multimedia art exhibit "Soundscape2007" and worked on numerous other musical projects.

Matthew Ellard has been producing, mixing and engineering music for 20 years. Starting in London, relocating to Los Angeles and finally hitting the Eastern seaboard around the turn of the century, where he continues to create sonic mayhem to this day.He has worked with many legendary producers such as Glyn Johns, Paul Rothschild, Rick Rubin, Dr Dre, Trevor Horn, Howard Benson, Mark "Spike" Stent, Slade and Kolderie , Jim Dickinson, Herbie Hancock, David Lynch to name a few...Although he mainly works with rock bands he likes to do a large variety of styles to keep things interesting. Bands range from Radiohead to Ice Cube, Ozzy Osbourne to Motorhead, Janes Addiction to Ministry, Queen to Elton John, George Michael to Seal, Natalie Merchant to Elliott Smith, Weezer to the Mighty Mighty Bosstones, Wilco to The Slip, Between the Buried and Me to Converge and many many more.

Allan has spent over 10 years mixing thousands of rock bands as the sound engineer and production manager in many Boston venues. He has been teaching audio for over 11 years and put together the curriculum and hands-on stations for Audio Recording One and the curriculum for Live Sound Reinforcement. Allan is currently the co-owner of The Mix Hut recording studio in Cambridge and founder of merch-music.com, a music download and marketing company. He has a B.A. in Business Administration from Nova Southeastern University and a M.Ed from Cambridge College. Allan has a passion for new ideas and technology and the ability to motivate students with his droll but thoughtful personality.

Associate Professor John Krivit has been teaching at NEIA since 1996.  Prior to this, he was the owner of the Soundmarket Recording Studio in Cambridge, MA.  John is the faculty advisor to the Student Chapter of the Audio Engineering Society at NEIA and serves on the Education Committee of the worldwide AES.  At NEIA, John teaches Audio Tech One, Listening & Analysis and Audio Production Seminar & Internship. Barry was musical director/producer for Rock N' Roll Hall of Fame's LaVern Baker. Producer of 30 albums including LaVern Baker, Linda Hopkins, Peter Wolf, Aimee Mann, the Irresponsibles, and Rev. Lee Mitchell. He was winner of Musician magazine's Best Unsigned Band Contest. Barry has written songs for feature films including Dick Tracy and Rage in Harlem and for the Broadway show "Wild Women Blues" (1997-2000). Barry holds memberships in Broadcast Music Inc., National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences, Audio Engineering Society, and serves as the faculty advisor for The New England Institute of Art's Naked Ear Records.

SB in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from MIT: Expected graduation June 2008

Monte runs Totally Sound, which provides studio and remote recording services, CD mastering, live sound engineering and studio facilities installation and design services. He counts among his clients; Tom Snyder Productions and the School of the Museum of Fine Arts. He also works as a software developer for Keystone Trading Corporation out of Chicago and was the release engineer, Software Quality Assurance Tester and a member of the technical support staff for Mathsoft, Inc. He writes equipment reviews and feature articles for the Music Maker Publications "Recording" magazine. He works with such local bands as Annette Farrington, Kicked in the Head and The Kitty Kill. Past clients include God's Little Joke, Dogfight and The Pixies. He has mixed music up and down the East Coast including at New York's CBGB and at numerous outdoor festivals.

Pete is our senior audio faculty, with over 15 years of teaching experience.  He teaches and has written curriculum for all of our studio classes and currently teaches Adv Studio Production, Adv Digital Mixing, and Adv Hard Disk Recording. Pete’s studio experience includes most of the Boston hip hop clientele, including Ed OG, Kreators, Krumb Snatcha, Virtuoso, Tang da Juice, Hitmakers, Acrobatic, Mr Lif , Special Teams and many more. Over the past 4 years, Pete has ventured off into location recording and High Definition video. Working with acts such as Oasis, The Pixies, The Hives, Govt Mule, Ani Difranco, Killswitch Engaged, O.A.R., Xl and Sean Price, Extreme, Boston, Godsmack, RTZ, Ernie & The Automatics, James Belushi.  He does a majority of the video editing at Studio Metronome, New England’s premier SSL mix room in Brookline NH, and will be directing his first live video shoot this spring 08.

Anthony Schultz has played guitar since the age of six. Originally from the Chicago area, Tony had attended Berklee College of Music, Boston, MA, where he had received a Bachelor's degree in Music Production & Engineering. After graduating May 1988, Tony opened up his recording facility and business Big T Productions in January 1989. Tony began teaching for the New England Institute of Art in the Fall of 1997 and is a specialist in MIDI and Digital Audio, Audio Technology, and Audio Recording. In May 2007, Tony received his Masters Degree in Music Technology from the University of Newcastle in Callaghan, Australia from taking online courses. He has presented at a number of colleges including Berklee College of Music, Harvard University, and the Royal College of Music in London. In October 2007, Tony presented a lecture to the Boston AES chapter entitled “Computer Networking Techniques for Audio & MIDI Applications.” Clients include RCA Records, Mercury Records, Virgin Records, WFNX, Filene's, Home Inc., EF Education, Schneider & Associates, Softskull Press Inc., Media Masters, Brand X Filmworks, Dudnyk Healthcare, Teatro de Marionettas de Venezuela, NAHB Production Group, Virtual Music Entertainment Inc.  Tony continues to work on recording his solo album as well as writing his book about his journey in the music industry. Al has 26 years of experience as a recording engineer, producer, and technician. He has worked at such studios as Power Station, Record Plant, Hit Factory, and Electric Lady. Al has worked with artists ranging from The Clash to Frank Sinatra. He has also done work on numerous films and television dramas.

Rick has worked extensively in both sound reinforcement and television audio. He has worked for ABC, NBC, FOX, TNN and ESPN to name a few, As a freelancer, he has been responsible for the design, setup, troubleshooting and operation of all audio communications systems for television production. He has worked the Boston Marathon, the US Open tennis tournament, NBA and NHL games and on the induction ceremonies at the Basketball Hall of Fame. As a live sound engineer, he has been the front of the house mixer, monitor engineer, as well as a system designer and technician for theaters, corporate settings, live television studio mixes and for music festivals. Career highlights include Woodstock 1994, the NHL All-star Game, HBO Boxing, World Cup Soccer and the Newport Jazz Festival.

Don developed the major of Music Production and Engineering at Berklee College of Music. Two years later, in 1985, he was appointed Dean of the Music Technology Division. He retired from this position in 2001. After completing his education at Eastman School of Music, Newark College of Engineering and Manhattan School of Music, Don served in the United States Marine Band, "The President's Own".Don was a Studio Recording Engineer at Columbia Records in New York City for twenty years before accepting the position at Berklee. He received a Grammy nomination for Best Engineered Classical Recording of 1971 for his recording of the Leonard Bernstein Mass. He has also earned twelve gold and platinum albums, including Chicago II, Chicago III, Chicago at Carnegie Hall, Bob Dylan: Self Portrait and New Morning, Sly Stone: Stand, Everyday People and Dance to the Music, Janis Joplin in Concert, Ted Nugent: Double Live Gonzo, and Labelle: Night Birds and Lady Marmalade. In 1998, Don became Chairman of the Education Committee of the International Audio Engineering Society, and was elected to serve one term as governor. He is currently on the AES Foundation Committee which awards graduate scholarships. He served two terms as Chairman of the Boston Chapter and is currently on the Executive Committee of the Boston Chapter of AES. Don is also a former governor of the Recording Academy. Don is currently on the teaching staff and Advisory Group at the New England Institute of Art, and consults and lectures on the Music Recording Industry. He is also on the board of Symphony by the Sea, a North Shore professional orchestra.
